For our Yummy Time 2.0, we decided to prepare Cherry Rice Krispies Treats with Chocolate Cover.

We have always loved Rice Krispies Treats, and making them gives us amazing memories from our early childhood. We also wanted to try adding a little twist to it, and we knew that if Rice Krispies Treats, cherry flavor and chocolate were together, it just couldn´t go wrong (we were right).

This is a recipe that most children have tried, and therefore we thought it was interesting and important to investigate about the content of the ingredients, and their nutritional value. We were interested in knowing how healthy (or unhealthy) it was, because no matter how tasty they are, remember that you are what you eat.

HISTORY OF RICE KRISPIES TREATS

The creators of the Rice Krispies Treats were two kellogg´s employees, Malitta Jensen and Mildred Day. They created the recipe in the Kellogg´s Kitchen in battle creek, Michigan , and it took them almost two weeks to perfect it. The Rice Krispies Cereal was first introduced in America on February the 29^th of 1928, and around the 1930´s, Malitta (who had previously worked on the American Honey Institute) and Mildred (who had previously worked on the Pillsbury cooking school), started working in the Kellogg´s kitchen.

There were similar recipes before, with the name of “Sticky Squares”, by the company of Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat, but instead of marshmallows, they used ingredients such as molasses or vinegar, which made the recipe too complicated.

In 1939, Malitta and Mildred created the “Marshmallow Squares”, and released the recipe as a promotional vehicle for the cereal. The recipe first appeared in the newspapers in 1940, and then was placed in the cereal box in 1941. There are versions which state that these delicious treats were created for the Michigan Campfire Girls, trying to create something new to sell at the bake sale, having the facility of obtaining the Campfire Girls´ marshmallows. There is no absolute certainty of which is the correct version.





Finally, on January 15 of 1995, packaged and ready-made, the “Rice Krispies Treats”(now under this name) were released to the public.
